WIFI and enabling WEP or EAP?

With a new laptop, router and WIFI card, all on the cable modem from NTL,
how do I enable the WIFI protection and is it worthwhile at home level?
WEP, EAP, enabling IEEE 802.1x seem like a very foreign country - so far.
Thanks for help.

Yes, enable all the protection you can, including encryption. Otherwise,
it's not just at 'home level'; anyone in range will be able to benefit
from your wide open network and use your NTL connection.

I agree with Rincewind, use whatever you have available. WPA is
preferable to WEP, if your cards/router support it.

Here's a fairly straightforward guide that I found when setting my
network up http://www.ezlan.net/#Wireless.

Good luck!!

Which are easily spoofable, do don't rely on that only. As has been
said, use all the safeguards available, including not broadcasting your
ssid either.

yep but to be honest it will soon become obvious through looking at logs etc
things are a miss
not really a good idea to remove ssid, many versions of xp get problems
about that.

Well sure, if you're running a commercial company behind it and have
something worth cracking you to steal or use.

But seriously, is it worth the hassle if all you have is 512K adsl and
your laptop with a few family snapshots? My advice would be to use
whatever is easy to set up and doesn't fall over. If that means WEP,
ssid hiding and mac addy locking, go for it.

Wellllll! With my son's heavy duty drinking mate (him too) who manages
networks
for a local school - 500 PCs with 300 private laptops (YES, THAT sort of
school)
after a fretful Sunday morning, all is now Wepped up to the kazoo, to the
extent that
even he was getting confused by all the options. WEP is NOT an easy choice
and
option, judging from the time spent and the confusion generated. Still, done
now!
Hallelujah!!

Well, no thanks, really.

Many thanks for the advice and commentary

I'm trying to spot where I said you should leave your system open.
Hint: I didn't.
