Zone alarm problem

I've seen that ntl recommend zonealarm pro on their website but i've tried
the free version and it slows my 2mb conn to nearer 1.1mb. It was fine to
begin with but it became slower and slower until broadband medic told me
that there was no connection at all due to the firewall.

Is there an easy fix to the problem, or can anyone recommend a firewall that
does work?

Cheers.

Tiny Firewall ?
Sygate ?

If you are using MSWXP use the built in firewall as long as you have SP2.
It doesn't have the log features but it's still a good FW (and it's free)

Open ZA , go to Program Control -> Programs and see whether BroadBand
Headache has permissions set for complete access - if it's complaing
about the firewall, that may well be the problem.

But, as MikeFNB wisely says, " kick off then damn NTL progs." I've
never seen an ISP produced app which worked well, and many of them
have potential spyware functions as well as interfering with your
connection and crashing willy-nilly.

Also, if you're using XP SP2, disable its built-in firewall - or dump
ZA. I'd prefer to keep ZA, personally. You _can_ use two software
firewalls together, but I would suspect it needs very careful setting
up and is a bit belt-and-braces.

just don't forget XP2 firewall only protects incoming, it does not protect
against outbound mailers etc or spam trojans.

Broadband medic actually told you it was ZA, or do you just assume
that?

Turn off ZA, and prove that this is the problem. FWIW I've used ZA Pro
for many years now, and it certainly does NOT slow down my connection.
I actually can't think of any reason why it would.

What spec PC do you have? Its possible your PC is overloaded.

ZA does just fine for "normal" users. If you're not then try Sygate. If you
need me to tell you to "uninstall ZA +reboot" before installing another
firewall then don't, just stick with ZA - networking is *hard*.

Kerio v2.1.5 is a "freebie", and is happy to run at 1.2 Mbps on an old 1100
Mhz AMD processor system

at the moment i have a download running at 150 Kbyte/sec at 10% CPU load....
running other apps simultaneously doesnt make a difference.

1 thing tho - i run this via Ethernet and a router - i would expect poorer
performance through a USB link.

If anyone is still showing an interest then you're all saints.

I've re-installed the connection software, and it works, but only in safe
mode(!). In normal mode I have uninstalled zonealarm and turned off the XP
firewall, but I still cannot view pages, and I'm getting 100% packet loss on
the ping test (whereas I get 100% success in safe mode)... what have I
done!?

Cheers.

Reinstalled the connection software - do you mean Broadband Headache,
Gregory?

You realise that it's extremely possible that that thing is the cause
of your problems? You would be well advised to uninstall it and use a
good registry cleaner to remove the remains. Oh, that's one other
problem you get with ISP produced apps (see previous comments).
You'll often have problems uninstalling them... :-(

sounds like you've disabled networking. Try removing your network card
drivers, and rebooting. The machine should rediscover them, reinstall
the drivers, and reconfigure networking.

oh, and remove broadband medic, its junk.
