Hi all,

First of all im not that technical but do ok with good instructions.

That said, I have a problem with 2 web sites that I am unable to view, it
seems that anyone who is not on NTL can see them but for some reason NTL
users can't.

My question is in 2 parts and I pray someone will have an answer.

1, Can you see www.vatsim.net or http://www.nationalsavings.co.uk/ the only
way I can see either site is to search google for the site then click on
cached and text only cache.

2, I have contacted Trend thinking it might be my recent install of Internet
Security V12 and they said "firstly want to confirm that you are using NTL
Cable (broadband service), as they have their own firewalls built into their
service" Could this be a hint to the problem???

I have also tried the following vatsim forum for help and been given a lot
of help if you have the time can you see if my advisors have missed
something. The thread is
http://forums.vatsim.net/viewtopic.php?t=2071&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0

Oh and I have mailed NTL for help but alas it seems they must be busy!
Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Both working for me in Newbury, have you tried clearing out
all your temporary internet files, including cookies etc?

Just a thought!

Hiya Daniel Slade.
Now my thoughts are, my connection is not running at optimum as stated AND
when I untick all the box's the problem will come back???
Well now you've pointed out there is a problem they *should* investigate.
If you until the boxes after he stated 7 days and the problem is still
there it means they haven't solved it and go back to using the manually
configured proxy.

Thanks all,

I rang and got through very helpful and solved the problem by setting up a
proxy connection. all now Ok.

BUT

30 Seconds after the phone call ended I got this in my mail box:-
"Occasionally when you contact the ntl Technical Support Bureau the
technician you speak to may ask you to specify a web cache proxy in the
settings of your Internet Explorer. You should be advised that this is a
temporary solution to your browsing problems whilst the cause of the issue
is being investigated.
To ensure your broadband service is operating at its optimum settings, after
a period of no more than 7 days you should remove any proxies that have been
specified.
To do this you simply need to open Internet Explorer and click on tools and
then internet options. Once in internet options you need to click onto the
connections tab and then on the LAN Settings button. Once in LAN Settings
un-tick all the boxes. Now click ok and then ok again and close Internet
Explorer."

Now my thoughts are, my connection is not running at optimum as stated AND
when I untick all the box's the problem will come back???

Any ideas

Thanks again

Daniel

To be honest, it probably *is* something on your computer blocking it, or
it could be a DNS issue, or a proxy issue.

First thing I'd do is clear all cookies, internet files etc. Then try
again. Then drop any 'trusted zones' etc, any pop-up blockers etc etc
and maybe drop my firewall and AV until I find what's stopping the
connection. Then work forwards again, replacing the controls for safe
surfing until it the sites stop working again.

Not much point trying too much detail as there could be almost anything
on your computer that's blocking them.

Try telnetting to port 80 on those sites, see if that gets through.
Extremely basic tests like that are useful in cases like this.

Game? GAME? G-A-M-E? It's a flight simulator, sir, of the utmost(ish)
veracity. On second thoughts, perhaps that should read utmost
voracity, at least as far as system resources are concerned! :-)

I know you wrote (or didn't) simply because I always read
ntl.discussion.security along with one or two other ntl.* NGs. The OP
was asking about <URL:http://www.vatsim.net>, a site about which I'm
well aware. FWIW, <URL:http://www.nationalsavings.co.uk/> also
functions perfectly well for me. Actually, I think I've replied to the
original poster on this very subject before.

However, I could well have confused myself - I almost certainly did -
due to top posting and the lack of snipping. Also, the somewhat
unconnnected Re: etc as a thread title doesn't really help - not your
fault - but I do tend to purge my received posts quite regularly. This
is a habit from those days when hard disk sized were measured in Mb
rather than Gb.

Anyway, the imaginatively-named "News Groups" is the person to whom I
believe should have replied, as far as I can tell.

Cheers, Lethe, & regards

You're spot on re The Sims although I do have three (I think) versions
of Sim City - not the same beast at all. I was on about MS Flight
Simulator.

Your post was seen in ntl.discussion.security - obviously - dunno how
it arrived in that group.

They haven't. MSFS is Microsoft Flight Simulator.

Sim City is by the same company that is responsible for The Sims. Sim
City predates The Sims by many years.

Hi Mark

Wise words, indeed. Perhaps you, like I do, come from the old school:
no top-posting and trim as much as reasonably possible and sensible.
Now ... Should I get started on web-forums and OE? :-0

However, I'm starting to confuse myself with my own posts - and there
is only this one thread and one other person involved in the

Being into simming myself I had to empty the cache before I was able
to check. I am able to see the Vatsim site. The National Savings site
also works OK.

I'm on the Cable system (Cambridge area, IP address 80.4.4.163, hostname
cpc1-cmbg2-6-0-cust163.cmbg.cable.ntl.com).

It could be something local to you which is the trouble, such as a web
cache. Also, are you using a proxy server?
